My early model making

Postby ecker2011 » Thu Apr 16, 2015 1:54 pm

Elsewhere here on the token I have mentioned that I have known Peter Mayhew since 1980. We have become very good friends over the years. When he was here in 1980, May of that year. We were contacted by Lucasfilm’s, they were putting together the TV special for the making of Empire strikes back. They were thinking that they might need Peter to do some more interviews for it. We then had an invite for both myself and my ex-wife along with Peter to come up to Marin and tour industrial like magic. We were the first fans ever to go through that facility. At that time it only took out one building, is now four buildings and possibly even larger. We were shown everything that they later showed in the TV special in person. My ex-wife and I were also taken out to lunch courtesy of Lucasfilm’s and we visited George Lucas’s office in Marin city. That was where it was located at that time. They had just broken ground on the Skywalker Ranch. We met and spoke with Jane Bay, George Lucas’s personal secretary back then. I had mentioned that I was into model making and she suggested I submit my resume to Lucasfilm’s and that I mentioned that I was a personal friend of peters. I did get to know several of the people working at Lucasfilm’s plus also meeting John Dykstra and his head model maker Brent McEwan of Apogee in Southern California. Making contacts is how you get your foot through the door in this kind of industry. Unfortunately severe arthritis set in to both of my hands and made it difficult for me to actually do this kind of work. Plus on top of that I went through a divorce. The only thing I have left from that time of my life is one small model that I built as a 3-D business card. This is what I used the show them what I was capable of doing. I called it a Pen-ship and you can see that it is built around a small ballpoint ink pen.

This is my only remaining 3-D business card it is more than 30 years old.

Here the cap is removed so that you can see that it is actually a ballpoint pen.

When I was at the offices in Marin city and in Jane Bay's office there was a stack of postcards.
They are artwork done by Ralph Macquarie who did some incredible conceptual art for the Star Wars movies.
This postcard was sent out to let people know they were moving from Hollywood to Marin.

I have been watching the new trailer when I can catch it and its always fun to see Chewey again. I am looking forward to seeing the movie when it finally comes out....and its fun to see the other side of him that you have been able to bring us Jess. Thanks for that.

And I thought that your model was wonderful. We can continue that.... given proper instructions I can be your hands.... so far.... I haven't had any problems in that direction . I am actually pretty good at building prototypes.

The new Star Wars teaser that you're talking about was first aired at the Star Wars convention that is going on right now in Anaheim California.
All of the original cast plus the new cast members and JJ Abrams are there and when they show this teaser at the very end we see Harrison Ford as Han Solo
and Peter Mayhew again asked Chewbacca. Han Solo says: chewy...... were home! The audience went wild! Here is a picture of one of the frames from that
teaser for the new movie Star Wars - the force awakens. Jess
