People go to great lengths to look physically attractive, but inner beauty is a more important and stronger basis for lasting relationships.

Compassion brings peace of mind. It brings a smile to the face. Education needs not only to develop our intelligence, but also to support the basic human values of warm-heartedness and compassion. These are not qualities confined to the religious, because we all want peace of mind. And if we remember that others too are human beings like us, we can extend a sense of kindness even towards those we think of as enemies.

The more compassionate our mind, the more we’ll be able to lead our lives transparently, honestly, truthfully, with nothing to hide.

Human beings are social animals and heavily interdependent. Climate change threatens us all. It’s one of those natural challenges that teach us that we must work together, making a common effort to reach a common goal. A more peaceful world and a more peaceful century require that we rely not on weapons but on developing a widespread inner peace.

I’m convinced that today’s young people can achieve a more peaceful world if they cultivate warm-heartedness and inner peace.

Helping others brings deep satisfaction. No matter how strong we may feel, our survival depends on others. Clearly the community is crucial to individual happiness, so if we make others happy, we too derive benefit. We need to act, but if we act out of self-centredness, it’s difficult to be transparent, to earn others' trust and friendship. By learning to be more warm-hearted we can create a more compassionate world.

It’s important to understand how our mind and emotions work. A cause and condition of anger is fear. Once it has erupted anger can lead to hatred, so we have to tackle it early. Anger tends to arise spontaneously, but we can develop compassion through training. Anger might bring energy, but the problem is that it’s blind. We observe physical hygiene to maintain our health, what we also need is emotional hygiene.

Compassion brings inner peace and whatever else is going on, that peace of mind allows us to see the whole picture more clearly.

Today we tend to think of education as if its only purpose was to make us more inventive and resourceful. Sometimes it even seems that those who are less educated are more honest and straightforward. Even though our society doesn’t emphasize it, the most crucial use of knowledge and education is to understand the importance of more wholesome action and disciplining the mind—essentially the development of a good heart
