Dalai Lama

I am committed to promoting a sense of the oneness of our human family. Wherever I go I remind people that we are all the same as human beings. The time has come to make an effort to understand that our future depends on others. In our own interest we must be concerned about others and take care of them. This is the wise way to ensure our self-interest.

The sight of violence makes us recoil, but we don’t notice damage to the environment until it’s already happened and there’s little to be done. Climate change is already affecting millions of farmers. We are interdependent as never before and yet we still tend to think in terms of ‘us’ and ‘them’. This Earth Day we need a greater sense of global responsibility based on our belonging to one human family.

We all have the same desire to live happily free from sorrow. But we also face a multitude of problems, most of which are of our own making. Many of them derive from our giving in to our disturbing emotions. Even if we’re self-centred, to be motivated by compassion is good because it leads to self-confidence, less fear and greater trust. Whereas being motivated by disturbing emotions leads to distrust and suspicion

To say we should be patient and tolerant in the face of trouble doesn’t mean we should give in. The purpose of engaging in the practice of patience is to strengthen the mind and strengthen the heart. But we need to remain calm. If we lose patience and our minds are swamped with emotion, we lose the ability to think clearly and discover how to remedy the destructive emotions that are upsetting us.

Someone may be rich and powerful, but without trusted friends they will never be happy. Someone else may be poor, but if they are surrounded by steadfast friends they are sure to be happy. Therefore, taking care of others is the best way to fulfil our own interests. We are social animals-we need to be warm-hearted and to look after others. And if we are to do that we need a strong sense of the oneness of humanity.

Dalai Lama

A good life does not mean just good food, good clothes, good shelter. These are not sufficient. A good motivation is what is needed—compassion, without dogmatism, without complicated philosophy—just understanding that others are human brothers and sisters and respecting their rights and human dignity.

Dalai Lama‏

If in day to day life you lead a good life, honestly, with love, compassion, and less selfishness, then automatically you will find peace.
